When Superstar Rajinikanth planned Rana, Sonu was the first actor he signed to play the all-important villain's role. In a chat with a local newwspaper, the actor talks about his promise to Rajinikanth and much more.
How did you land up doing Rana?
I'm a big fan of Superstar Rajinikanth Sir. We first met when I did a cameo in his Chandramukhi. About two months ago, he was in Mumbai and called me for a meeting. He told me that I was to play the main villain in Rana. At that time, he hugged me and I immediately said — 'Done sir' , without even listening to the story. Later, K S Ravikumar gave me a brief outline of my role, but I would have signed it anyway.
Tell us about your meeting with Rajinikanth
He is so humble and down to earth. Within a few moments of our meeting in Mumbai, he was telling me about my performance in Dabangg and Arundhati. Rajini sir understands the importance of supporting actors, especially the guys playing the baddies in our films.
When will Rana start?
Rajini sir is on the road to recovery. I have spoken to his close family members and I'm sure there is nothing to worry about. Once he fully recovers and takes rest, we will start the film. My priorities are with Rana and Rajini sir. I have told all my producers the moment Rana starts and my dates are needed, I will drop everything and rush to be at the beck and call of Rajini sir.
So what will happen to your other commitments in Tamil and Telugu?
I'm doing two Hindi films, three Telugu films and a Tamil film. But, my priority remains with Rana. To play the main villain in a Rajini sir film is a dream for any actor in India.
